Election Scorecards Launched

Generation Zero Launches Election Scorecards

Youth Climate Change group Generation Zero have launched online scorecards for council and mayoral candidates across the country.

“Our aim is to get more people voting in local elections, and to make an informed choice. We need bold, courageous politicians who will fight for our future. Our scorecards are designed to help voters know who those candidates are.” Auckland Director Leroy Beckett.

The scores are reflections of candidates’ commitments to issues broadly related to climate change, based on their own statements provided to Generation Zero. The scorecards are available at www.localelections.nz and www.aucklandelections.nz

Generation Zero sees these scores as a way to increase voter turnout, especially among young people.

“We believe the bigger cause of low voter turnout at local elections - more than apathy - is that potential voters feel uninformed" Says Beckett "These scorecards are our attempt to change that”.

“They are a simplification of complex and nuanced issues, but a necessary compromise to increase engagement with local government for all New Zealanders”.

Generation Zero works extensively on issues such as transport and urban planning, where there are opportunities to reduce carbon emissions.

“Local Government is hugely important. Councils are able to drastically reduce our carbon emissions and increase the liveability of our cities by encouraging public and active transport, and the building of sustainable, energy-efficient homes and workplaces.”

In all seriousness what you are doing is wrong GenZero. Take a look at Craig Lords Mayoral Candidate video about your results and actually listen to what he is saying. I know u will want to go onto the defensive but STOP and actually listen and maybe do some internal reflection.

Candidates own statements may not be such a good judge of a candidates commitment to the environment and climate change issues. Actions speak louder than words, and there are many councilors in my electorate that made lots of noise about the environment and have let us down badly. Is it possible to look at the ‘track record’ of each electorate on various environmental issues and compare votes for and against? This may be a good way to assess candidates that are standing again? I know this will take a lot of work, however maybe a call for volunteers?

I am seeking reasonable, accessible public transport train and bus links for emissions reductions!! Auckland is a growing city and we need to cater for all including cycle and walking lanes for healthy lifestyles.

Talking Auckland, we definitely need to know where candidates for the coming local government elections stand on responding to the climate emergency with genuine urgency. I also think that the Council should explore more genuinely participatory ways of including the voice of the public and working together. Current so-called consultation keeps the public at arms length and is very secretive about how the results are used, if at all. We need to establish trust and work to a common aim or the potentially uncomfortable steps needed will never be taken until is os too late.

Articles that have significant and savvy remarks are more agreeable, at any rate to me. It’s fascinating to peruse what other individuals thought and how it identifies https://www.assignmentsolution.co.uk with them or their customers, as their point of view could help you later on.
